Portage Park Pickleball was the brainchild of Marcie Doherty and her sister Melissa Moschgat. Marcie being a resident of Florida brought the game she loved and understood to be a growing sport to Portage park. The sisters approached the Portage Area Joint Parks and Recreation Commission asking permission to install a permanent pickleball court at the upper court of the park. With the blessing of the Rec commission Marcie and Melissa began drawing up plans. 1 court then 3 courts were envisioned. Perry Scarton became involved due to his friendship with the M&M sisters and budding interest in the sport. The project grew in scope and size to what it has become today. 6 permanent, painted, lighted courts.
In the spring of 2023 it was decided to begin fundraising for the project. 3 temporary courts were established. The response to these courts was immediate with many using the facilities. An app was created to bring like minded people together. Portage Park Pickleball was formed. Members of this group worked to gather funds from local businesses, civic groups and individuals. Deb Shope, Ceil Kittell, Sharon Shoff and others worked many hours to bring the courts to fruition. We all are proud of the efforts of the many. We wish to thank all the individuals who planned, worked and supported this endeavor. Pickleball has become a huge draw to our community park. People young and old fill the courts many times during the summer. The sound of the smack of a pickleball is music to the ears of all who believe in the game. Those who saw a chance to improve our community with another recreational activity for all. Portage Park Pickleball worked very hard for 18 months to make it happen. Congratulations to all involved.
